How does music boost your child’s development?

A love of music is a truly enriching part of life, who doesn’t have a favourite song they can’t help but tap their foot to, or get up and dance to at a party! We know that music not only makes us feel good but it has the ability to shape our children’s cognitive abilities as well if they start to be immersed in it from a young age.

With this is mind, music education is another crucial component of our nursery programme. Playing an instrument or engaging with music can boost a child's cognitive development, confidence and improve moods and influence behaviour.

We know that music enhances memory, improves spatial-temporal skills and encourages a deeper understanding of complex patterns and sequences.

Learning, or simply understanding music, is a pleasure in itself, but did you know that it also improves children’s abilities in core subjects like mathematics and science in addition to a plethora of other benefits such as:

  • Music helps children express and regulate their emotions

  • Music provides an outlet for emotional expression and can be a valuable tool for young children, who still need to gain the vocabulary to express their feelings. It helps them identify and manage their emotions, improving their emotional resilience.

  • Singing, dancing and playing instruments allow children to express happiness, sadness, excitement and other emotions healthily and constructively.

  • Music encourages friendship and teamwork

  • Participating in group music activities, such as singing in a choir or playing in a band, teaches children about teamwork. They learn to listen, synchronise their efforts and work towards a common goal, such as learning a song for a Christmas nativity. These group experiences can build a child’s sense of belonging, enhancing social development and people skills.
